Things to do for Memorial Day Weekend in Mountaineer Country

Events

You can celebrate these heroes at Prickett’s Fort on Monday, May 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission for military veterans is free and the cost ranges between $4-8 for all other attendees. Family, friendly, live, dramatic tours will be available to help visitors understand the essence of 18th-century life inside the fort.

Join High Ground Brewing, a veteran-owned business in Terra Alta, WV, for their three-day Memorial Day Weekend event, taking place May 27 to 29. ​​Kickstart the weekend on Saturday by getting some seafood boil from Mister Crabs Catering and Boil Truck- a food truck offering a unique coastal experience that you cannot get anywhere else while listening to music from 18 Strings from 5 – 8 p.m. On Sunday try a variety of different beers made by the veteran-owned brewery and taproom while snacking on It’s a Wrap Food Truck favorites. Head back over on Monday for more music with Mark Palmer from 3 – 6 p.m. and a steak hoagie from The Real Deal Food Trailer.

Carry on tradition with the 156th Annual Memorial Day Parade in Grafton, WV, taking place at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 29. The parade will start at the intersection of Main and Bridge Street, making its way through downtown and up Walnut Street before concluding at the Grafton National Cemetery.

Spend Memorial Day exploring Tygart Lake during the Tygart Lake Open Historic Cruise on May 29. Enjoy a leisurely historic tour of Tygart Lake in Grafton, WV aboard the “Princess” cruise boat. Listen to stories about indigenous people who once inhabited the area, the civil war, and various interesting stories. Tickets for the cruise are $25 per person, and individuals are encouraged to secure tickets in advance on their website.

Gallery 62 by Taylor County Arts Council is celebrating the 25th anniversary of their Memorial Day Fine Arts Exhibit! Visit during special Spirit of Grafton hours, 11 a.m. –  8 p.m. on Saturday, May 27.

Triple S Harley-Davidson will be hosting a Memorial Day Cookout at their location from noon to 2 p.m. on May 29. Listen to some music played by their DJ and enjoy classic cookout food and drink with a donation of $10. Veterans eat free. This cookouts proceeds are benefiting Operation Activet which is focused on assisting veterans returning to civilian life, with an emphasis on veterans living with PTSD.

Outdoor

Get outdoors and check out events that will be going on during Memorial Day Weekend around Mountaineer Country!

Wanting to catch a breath of fresh air during the weekend? Head to the Coopers Rock Overlook for a beautiful sunset view of Coopers Rock State Forest. Take in the fresh greenery and hear the sounds of nature surrounding you while enjoying some of the most breathtaking sights. The overlook is open to the public from dawn until dusk.

Head to Taylor County and take on the hiking and biking trails around Tygart Lake State Park! Pack a lunch and stop at one of their many outdoor picnic areas for a fun day in the sun.

Stay outside and take in nature’s beauty at West Virginia Botanic Garden. You can walk an easy path through the forest or relax in a hammock! The garden is open to the public from dawn to dusk.

The Morgantown Farmer’s Market is in full swing this summer available every Saturday morning (from 8:30 a.m. to noon) on Spruce Street in downtown Morgantown. Go online to find a variety of food and art. Pick up cookies, jams, cheese, meats, veggies, and more. You won’t be disappointed!

The arts are alive and well here in Mountaineer Country! Have a fun day with take-home art projects from The WOW! Factory! They’ll have fun unleashing their creative side and will have something to remember good times!
