7 Ways to Celebrate the 4th of July

Fireworks, Activities, and Upcoming Events Around Mountaineer Country

Looking for something to do this 4th of July? Locals have always been patriotic when it comes to participating in July 4th activities, and now you can join in on the fun, too! Put on your red, white, and blue attire and start waving those American flags because the 4th of July is almost here!

On July 4, the City of Morgantown is back with their annual patriotic parade – Celebration of America. A free event, the parade will begin at 6 p.m. on High Street. Whether you’re watching the parade on the sidewalks, waving on a float or riding your bike in the lineup as a part of the Decorated Bike Event, Celebration of America is sure to be fun for all!

Watch Fireworks

Head to the Monongalia County Ballpark for a day full of fun with baseball and fireworks show on July 4th! Tickets are $5 and gates open at 6:00pm.

Fireworks will start around 10:00 p.m. after the Palatine Park Independence Day celebration in Fairmont. Make sure to bring a chair or blanket to watch the show!

Listen to Live Music

Head to Morgantown Brewing Company that evening at 6:00 p.m. to hear the band 18 Strings!

Greg Short and Friends will be playing at Screech Owl Brewing in Bruceton Mills starting at 1:00 p.m.

Driving through to see family? Head to Palatine Park in Fairmont, WV, at 8:00 p.m. to hear the sounds of the Shinnston Community Band. Each year, this group fills the park with exciting patriotic songs the whole family will love. Additional artists at the Palatine Park Independence Day celebration includes Rissi Palmer and Trial By Fire!

Relax on the Water

Take your friends or family to Krepps or Marilla Park for a day by the pool or rent a boat, kayaks, canoes, or paddle boats and enjoy time on the water at Cheat Lake. If you enjoy fishing, there are several fishing areas in both Monongalia and Preston County, or be adventurous by whitewater rafting on the Cheat River.

Plan a Cookout

A 4th of July cookout is always more fun while camping! Camp at one of Greater Morgantown’s many campgrounds for a weekend of grilling and outdoor activities. You can also host a cookout at one of the parks that provide picnic areas and allow grilling.

Get a Workout In

Participate in a 4-mile run or walk with Morgantown Running 4 on the 4th on Independence Day. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female runners along with winners picked from random drawings. A one-mile run for kids will also be held.

Join CrossFit Morgantown for their Independence Day free community workout from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

Family Fun

Experience 18th-century life through a child’s eyes and swing by Pricketts Fort, located in Fairmont, WV, a day early for their Colonial Kids Day from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be fun, educational activities for the kiddos throughout the day. (Kids must be accompanied by an adult.) Visit the park again on July 4 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. for their Independence Day Celebration. The Declaration of Independence will be read aloud at noon.

Join Lakeview Golf Resort and Spa for its Firecracker Open on July 7 and 8. Prizes, a raffle, and an awards luncheon will also be part of the event. Check out their website for information on pricing and registration.

Make a weekend out of it and call book a stay to play a round of golf or enjoy a spa day at the resort!

Get outdoors and enjoy the natural beauty around town! Take a hike at Coopers Rock State Forest and stop by the overlook and take in the scenic view.
