7 Ways to Celebrate the 4th of July
Fireworks, Activities, and Upcoming Events Near Greater Morgantown
Looking for something to do this 4th of July? Greater Morgantown locals have always been patriotic when it comes to participating in July 4th activities, and now you can join in on the fun, too! Put on your red, white, and blue attire and start waving those American flags because the 4th of July is almost here!
6:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. | Downtown Morgantown
Following the Celebration of America in downtown Morgantown, fireworks will be launched from the Mountaineer Middle School football field at dusk.
Wisp Resort is also launching fireworks from the top of the Wisp Mountain Park on July 4th. Fireworks start at dusk. The Mountain Park will be closing 30 minutes before dusk to allow time for setup. You will be able to view the fireworks from the Main Lodge Deck, McHenry Cove and other McHenry businesses, as well as the Route 219 overlook. If it rains, the fireworks will be launched on Thursday, July 5.
Attend a Parade
High Street | 6:30 p.m.
On July 4th, the annual Celebration of America parade will occur in downtown Morgantown. The parade will start lining up on High Street at 5:30 p.m. and begin promptly at 6:30 p.m.
Listen to Live Music
Annual Independence Day Concert with the Morgantown Municipal Band | 11 a.m.
Stop by the Front Overhang of the WVU Creative Arts Center at 11:00 a.m. for the Annual Independence Day Concert with the Morgantown Municipal Band and its Conductor, C.B. Wilson. There will also be a featured soloist; violinist Master Gunnery Sergeant Peter Wilson, of the United States Marine Band. Patrons are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets!
If you’re in downtown Morgantown, music will be played throughout the day on Courthouse Square.
Driving through to see family? Head to Palantine Park in Fairmont, WV, at 8:00 p.m. to hear the sounds of the Shinnston Community Band. Each year, this group fills the park with exciting patriotic songs the whole family will love.
Relax on the Water
Take your friends or family to Krepps or Marilla Park for a day by the pool or rent a boat, kayaks, canoes, or paddle boats and enjoy time on the water at Cheat Lake. If you enjoy fishing, there are several fishing areas in both Monongalia and Preston Counties, or be adventurous by whitewater rafting on the Cheat River.
Plan a Cookout
A 4th of July cookout is always more fun while camping! Camp at one of Greater Morgantown’s many campgrounds for a weekend of grilling and outdoor activities. You can also host a cookout at one of the parks that provide picnic areas and allow grilling.
If you’d rather not plan a cookout, Triple S Harley-Davidson is hosting a 4th of July Cookout on July 4 from noon to 3 p.m. Attendees can look forward to food, fun, and a performance by Johnny FreakBand. Active military, veterans, and first responders eat free. A $5 donation will cover food provided by Stone House Restaurant and Inn.
Run a 4K
Participate in a 4-mile run or walk with Morgantown Running 4 on the 4th on Independence Day. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female runners, along with winners picked from random drawings. A one-mile run for kids will also be held.
Join Lakeview Golf Resort and Spa for its Firecracker Open on July 7 and 8. Prizes, a raffle, and an awards luncheon will also be part of the event. Check out their website for information on pricing and registration.
Terra Alta Community Park will host an Old Fashioned July 4th Day in the Park on July 4th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A dog show, The Jewel of Alleghenies quilt show, and performances by the 249th Army National Guard Band and the Vandells are scheduled throughout the event.
The WV Black Bears will be battling the Williamsport Crosscutter on July 4th at the Monongalia County Ballpark. The game will begin at 7:05 p.m.
