The WVU Outdoor Education Center, just minutes from West Virginia University, is a multi-faceted facility designed to promote learning in a fun and exciting environment. The Center, located in the WVU University Research Forest, is comprised of a variety of low and high challenge course elements, a Canopy Tour, and a Yurt classroom. It is the perfect environment for trained facilitators and guides to provide fun and educational outdoor learning experiences.†

In addition to the nearby campgrounds that provide accommodations, our Yurt classroom provides an alternate area to learn. Heating is available during colder temperatures and the Yurt and Deck provide a perfect place to eat lunch or process the day's experience. For accommodating larger group meetings or classes, the Westvaco Natural Resource Center is just a 5 minute walk from the Outdoor Recreation Center (

The WVU Challenge Course, designed to promote group development and team-building, is composed of 11 low ropes elements and 3 high ropes elements. Each of these elements provide a unique experience that can become a powerful catalyst for group and individual learning. Programming is tailored to meet the specific goals of your group in order to create smooth and exciting experiences.†

The Canopy Tour is comprised of four zip-lines, an aerial bridge, and a tandem rappel station to exit the course. Zips range in length from the 201' starting zip to the 830' zip at the conclusion of the course. After exiting the course, participants hike from the base of the final tree back to the starting point on an interpretive nature trail through the forest. Throughout the Canopy Tour experience, participants learn about the University Research Forest as the canopy of trees provide a unique perspective of the forest and the individual trees supporting the tour's structure.†

The Outdoor Education Center is open to everyone and all groups and individuals are welcome to participate. The course can accommodate groups 10 to 100 people in size. Our professional staff will work with you to create a learning experience that meets your goals.†

The Canopy Tour has regularly scheduled tours and can also accommodate groups who wish to schedule a private tour. Each tour accommodates 8 participants and lasts approximately 2 hours.

Please feel free to contact us for more information or to schedule your next Outdoor Education Center experience. In addition, Canopy Tours can be scheduled and registered simply by visiting our website.
